I've been reading quite a bit about Podcasting and the new new new media. Sure I've listened to a few. I've even read about stories about companies like BearingPoint narrating their Global Financial Services group white papers and making them available as podcasts to encourage registration and foster sales leads; see the MarketingSherpa case here.
I've also read some statistics about iPod owners in ZDNet. There is a disconnect, no? 18-28 year old males are not the prospect of many businesses with complex sales cycles. Now Zippo would do themselves good to produce podcasts of live music with their Hot Tours featuring unsigned bands, but that's just common sense.
We are in the testing and validation stage of a new concept. Great for those industrious few and I repeat few, that are experimenting, hell I might even record this post and turn it into an mp3 file for any of you audiophiles that would prefer to listen.
Maybe it's the marketing services industry, and specifically the media departments wanting desperately to find the next pot of gold or tired "new media" idea to trot out on new business pitches. Podcasting should be part of the strategy, but when it makes sense; because right now it just sounds like a bunch of grown-ups trying to sit at the "cool" table, and that's just lame.
